The Master
M. F. Husain
The Picasso of India — barefoot, prolific, unstoppable. Husain's galloping horses and cubist goddesses made him the most celebrated modern Indian artist.

The Life
M. F. Husain began by painting cinema hoardings on the streets of Bombay before joining the Progressive Artists' Group that remade Indian art after Independence. Tireless, barefoot and irrepressibly public, he became the most famous artist India has produced, honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and courted by collectors worldwide. Controversy over some of his mythological subjects drove him into self-exile in his final years, and he died in London in 2011.
The Hand
Husain painted with a swift, muscular line and vibrant, flat colour, drawing on Cubism, Indian miniature and folk art alike. His galloping horses, village women and reimagined gods and goddesses carry an unmistakable energy and speed of hand.
The Legacy
Often called the Picasso of India, he was the towering popular face of Indian modern art and did more than any other to bring it international attention. His restless output shaped the market and the public image of the modern Indian master.
The Market
Husain ranks among the highest-selling of all Indian modernists, his major canvases regularly reaching many crore at auction and setting benchmarks for the market in modern Indian art.
