The Life
Born in Urbino, the son of a court painter, Raphael absorbed the refinement of that ducal city before studying under Perugino and then racing to master the innovations of Leonardo and Michelangelo in Florence. Summoned to Rome by Pope Julius II, he frescoed the papal apartments — the Stanze — with the School of Athens among them, and became the most sought-after artist in Christendom. He died on his thirty-seventh birthday, mourned as a prince of painters.
