The Story
The School of Athens is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was painted between 1509 and 1511 as part of a commission by Pope Julius II to decorate the rooms now called the Stanze di Raffaello in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.

Painted 1509–1511 in the Vatican's Stanza della Segnatura, The School of Athens represents philosophy among Raphael's four frescoes there. Raphael, in his mid-20s, sets ancient philosophers inside a vast coffered basilica whose orthogonals converge on Plato and Aristotle, framed by a final archway. Plato (modeled, many believe, on Leonardo da Vinci) points upward with the Timaeus; Aristotle gestures downward with his Ethics — idealism versus empiricism compressed into a silent gesture. Several identifications remain genuinely debated: the brooding Heraclitus figure is widely thought to be a portrait of Michelangelo added after Raphael glimpsed the Sistine ceiling; the geometer bent over a slate is usually Euclid but often argued to be Bramante; a young man in a black beret gazing at the viewer is Raphael's own self-portrait.
Technique & materials
Buon fresco, roughly 500 x 770 cm. Worked out in a full-size preparatory cartoon, transferred to the wall by pouncing or incising, then painted in daily patches (giornate).
Provenance
As a fresco painted directly onto a Vatican wall, it has no ownership provenance — never sold, moved, or changed hands since 1509-1511, remaining in situ as part of the Vatican Museums. A full-scale cartoon for the right-hand group survives independently in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan.
Conservation history
Several cleaning and conservation campaigns over the centuries as part of the Vatican Museums' ongoing care of the Stanze. A 1789 Gobelins tapestry weaving of the composition underwent a separate three-year restoration from 2017. The fresco's immovability has protected it from transport damage.
