Primavera is a large panel painting in tempera paint by the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli made in the late 1470s or early 1480s. It has been described as "one of the most written about, and most controversial paintings in the world", and also "one of the most popular paintings in Western art".

Primavera was painted in the late 1470s or early 1480s, likely linked (via a 1499 inventory) to the 1482 marriage of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, possibly informed by Marsilio Ficino's Neoplatonic circle and court poet Poliziano, though his exact involvement is unresolved. Nine figures are arrayed 'like pearls on a string' in a shallow, tapestry-like frieze rather than deep mathematical perspective. Right to left: Zephyrus seizes Chloris, who transforms into Flora; Venus presides at center beneath a blindfolded Cupid; the three Graces dance at left of center; Mercury disperses clouds at far left. Conservators have identified roughly 130 plant species among nearly 190 blooms depicted, a demonstration of botanical precision within an otherwise non-naturalistic spatial scheme.
Technique & materials
Tempera on wood panel, 202 x 314 cm — very large for a secular mythological subject at the time. Tempera's quick-drying nature permitted the fine linear description of nearly 190 botanically accurate blooms.
Provenance
Recorded via 1499 Medici inventory hanging above a lettuccio in Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco's Florentine palace. Moved to Villa di Castello, recorded by Vasari alongside Birth of Venus. Entered the Uffizi in 1815; evacuated to Montegufoni Castle for WWII safekeeping, returned after the war.
Conservation history
Centuries of grime and old varnish darkened the palette; a major 1978 conservation campaign cleaned the panel and recovered much of the original coloristic clarity.
