The Story
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known mononymously as Michelangelo, was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance. He was born in the Republic of Florence but was mostly active in Rome from his 30s onwards.
His work was inspired by models from classical antiquity and had a lasting influence on Western art. Michelangelo's creative abilities and mastery in a range of artistic arenas define him as an archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and elder contemporary, Leonardo da Vinci.
Given the sheer volume of surviving correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences, Michelangelo is one of the best-documented artists of the 16th century. He was lauded by contemporary biographers as the most accomplished artist of his era.

Painted 1508–1512 as part of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling cycle for Pope Julius II, The Creation of Adam is the fourth of nine central Genesis panels, depicting God breathing life into Adam. The entire image organizes around a single negative-space gap — roughly 1.9 cm between God's outstretched finger and Adam's limp hand. God surges in from the right inside a swirling, crowded cloak; Adam reclines on a bare hillside, his own raised arm mirroring God's gesture but without its urgency. Adam's musculature draws on the Belvedere Torso, an antique Roman marble Michelangelo revered. Scholarly debate continues over the figures under God's left arm (Walter Pater proposed Eve and unborn souls); physician Frank Meshberger argued in 1990 that the swirling drapery traces a human brain in cross-section; anatomist Deivis Campos identified in 2019 a possible extra rib on Adam's torso referencing Eve's creation. None of these readings is settled consensus.
Technique & materials
Buon fresco: pigment applied to wet lime plaster (intonaco) so it chemically bonds as the plaster dries, requiring each day's patch (giornata) to be painted before drying. Extensive preparatory chalk studies survive, including a 1508 study of Adam's limp hand.
Provenance
The fresco has never left its original site: it remains in situ in the Sistine Chapel, Vatican City, under continuous papal custodianship since 1512 — one of the most continuously viewed and reproduced artworks in Western history.
Conservation history
A major, controversial restoration 1980–1994, led by Gianluigi Colalucci, removed centuries of soot and old varnish and consolidated loosening plaster; critics including James Beck argued the cleaning stripped away secco shadow-glazes Michelangelo applied on dry plaster, leaving a 'washed-out' surface — a debate that remains unresolved. Since restoration, an advanced climate-control system manages tourist-driven humidity and pollution risk.
