The Story
The Sistine Madonna, also called the Madonna di San Sisto, is an oil painting by the Italian artist Raphael. The painting was commissioned in 1512 by Pope Julius II for the church of San Sisto, Piacenza, and probably executed c. 1513–1514. The canvas was one of the last Madonnas painted by Raphael.
Giorgio Vasari called it "a truly rare and extraordinary work".

Commissioned around 1512 by Pope Julius II as the altarpiece for San Sisto, Piacenza, the Sistine Madonna was executed largely 1513-1514, among the last works Raphael painted before his 1520 death. Green curtains part like a stage reveal, showing the Madonna stepping forward from a bank of cherub-face clouds; Pope Sixtus II kneels at left, Saint Barbara looks down at right, their gazes completing a circular movement. The Madonna appears to walk out of the frame's illusionistic threshold directly into the viewer's space. Christ's unusually mature expression is often read by museum interpreters as foreknowledge of his sacrificial destiny. The two bored-looking cherubs at the base have achieved independent visual life on stamps and greeting cards.
Technique & materials
Oil on canvas, 265 x 196 cm — unusually on canvas rather than wood panel, permitting the scale needed for elevated altar display. Pigment analysis identifies malachite/orpiment greens, natural ultramarine, and lead-tin-yellow with vermilion for Barbara's sleeve.
Provenance
Completed for San Sisto, Piacenza, remaining there over two centuries. In 1754, Augustus III of Saxony purchased it, transporting it to Dresden, where it became a touchstone for Goethe and Dostoevsky. Evacuated during WWII, seized in 1945 by the Soviet Red Army and held at Moscow's Pushkin Museum for a decade; returned to East Germany in 1955 and reinstalled at the Dresden Gemäldegalerie, where it remains.
Conservation history
The 1945 Soviet seizure and decade-long Moscow storage generated conflicting contemporary accounts of humidity exposure; since its 1955 return it has remained on continuous display under standard conservation monitoring.
