The Birth of Venus is a painting by the Italian artist Sandro Botticelli, probably executed in the mid-1480s. It depicts the goddess Venus arriving at the shore after her birth, when she had emerged from the sea fully grown. The painting is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.

Botticelli painted The Birth of Venus around 1484-1486 in Florence, depicting Venus arriving at shore in a scallop shell, blown by Zephyrus and Aura, about to be draped by a Hora. The long-assumed Medici commission (Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici) was undermined in 1975 when scholars found the picture absent from his 1499 inventory — the connection is plausible tradition, not documented fact. Venus's pose borrows classical contrapposto but departs from it: critic Kenneth Clark noted her weight shifted implausibly and her neck elongated beyond anatomical plausibility, her silhouette following 'the curve of a Gothic ivory' rather than antique marble. No figures cast shadows, keeping the scene in a timeless, idealized register. Infrared examination has revealed pentimenti, including changes to the Hora's footwear.
Technique & materials
Tempera on canvas (two pieces sewn together) rather than Botticelli's usual wood panel. Gold pigment was applied after framing, highlighting hair, wings, and shell. A final cool gray egg-based varnish unified the surface.
Provenance
First documented at the Villa di Castello via Vasari's Lives (1550), alongside Primavera; the assumed Medici commission cannot be confirmed since it is absent from the 1499 inventory. Remained in Medici holdings until transfer to the Uffizi in 1815, with a period at the Galleria dell'Accademia from 1919 before returning to the Uffizi.
Conservation history
The green pigment used for the wind gods' wings and orange tree leaves has darkened markedly with light exposure; portions shielded by the frame retain closer-to-original hue, offering direct evidence of colour loss elsewhere. No single dramatic modern restoration defines its history; care has been incremental.
