The Life

Born in Figueres in Catalonia, Salvador Dalí trained in Madrid before joining the Surrealists in Paris, where he became the movement's most flamboyant star. His wife and muse Gala presided over an art of hallucinatory dreams — none more famous than the melting watches of The Persistence of Memory. Expelled from the Surrealist group for his politics and provocations, he spent decades as a global showman, and crowned his life with the Dalí Theatre-Museum in his home town.

The Hand

Dalí painted what he called hand-made dream photographs: bizarre, impossible visions rendered with meticulous, old-master precision. Through his 'paranoiac-critical' method he conjured double images and metamorphosing forms, so that each fantastical scene is made utterly, disquietingly convincing.

The Legacy

He became the popular face of Surrealism and one of the most recognisable artists of the twentieth century, his imagery woven permanently into modern culture. The melting clock is among the most famous inventions in all of art.

The Market

A blue-chip name whose major Surrealist canvases command many millions at auction; his enduring fame keeps demand for his paintings, prints and objects consistently strong.
