Painted in Florence around 1505-1506 for patron Taddeo Taddei, Madonna of the Meadow shows Raphael, still in his early 20s, absorbing Leonardo da Vinci's pyramidal figure grouping and sfumato modeling. The composition is a tight, self-contained pyramid: Mary's head at the apex, her arms and the two children's bodies descending. Christ reaches toward a small cross held by the infant John the Baptist, linking all three in a closed circuit of glances and touches read as protective love shadowed by foreknowledge of the Passion. Mary's blue mantle over red underdress follows conventional colour symbolism (ecclesia/Christ's blood); a small red poppy in the grass reinforces the passion symbolism at ground level.
Technique & materials
Oil on poplar panel, 113 x 88 cm. Built over an opaque underpaint and gesso ground with translucent oil glazes achieving soft flesh transitions, directly indebted to Leonardo's example. Signed and dated on the Madonna's hem, 'RAPHAEL URBINAS MDVI.'
Provenance
Made for Florentine patron Taddeo Taddei around 1505-1506. Acquired around 1662-63 by Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Tyrol, entering the Ambras Castle Kunstkammer. Transferred to Vienna in 1773, later hanging at the Belvedere Palace (source of its alternate title, Madonna del Belvedere). Remains in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
Conservation history
A 1983 Kunsthistorisches Museum treatment removed discolored retouching and degraded varnish, revealing fine-scale surface disruption in the Madonna's blue mantle caused by uneven drying rates between oil layers.
