He liberated oil paint into a fully expressive medium and set the course for Rubens, Velázquez, Rembrandt and the whole painterly tradition. He is the Venetian colossus at the fountainhead of European colour.

The Life

Tiziano Vecellio, known as Titian, trained under the Bellini in Venice and, with Giorgione, ushered in the sensuous colourism of the Venetian High Renaissance. Over a career of astonishing length he became the most sought-after painter in Europe, official artist to the Emperor Charles V and to King Philip II of Spain, for whom he painted his great mythological poesie. He worked until his death in extreme old age during a Venice plague, his final canvases the freest of all.

The Hand

Titian is the master of colorito — colour and the loaded brush over drawn line. He built form in layered, glowing glazes and, in his later years, in broken, almost abstract strokes applied with brush and fingers, achieving flesh of extraordinary warmth and his famous, sumptuous reds.

The Legacy

He liberated oil paint into a fully expressive medium and set the course for Rubens, Velázquez, Rembrandt and the whole painterly tradition. He is the Venetian colossus at the fountainhead of European colour.

The Market

His major works are treasured museum holdings that seldom trade; when a Titian does appear it is a landmark event, and his finest paintings are valued in the tens of millions and beyond.
