Charles IV of Spain and His Family
Francisco de Goya · 1746–1828Goya assembles the Spanish royal family in glittering court dress, yet withholds all flattery, rendering each face with unsparing candour. The artist himself stands half-hidden at his easel in the shadows behind them.

Critics have noted that Goya painted the royal family so frankly that the group has been likened to the grocer and his family.
The Full Story
Full analysis
Goya painted this monumental group portrait in 1800 from preparatory studies at Aranjuez, showing Carlos IV, Queen María Luisa, and eleven family members, with Goya himself in shadow at left, before an easel — a direct citation of Velázquez's Las Meninas. Nineteenth-century critics (Théophile Gautier's line that the family looks like 'the corner baker and his wife after winning the lottery') read it as satire of a decadent monarchy; most modern Prado scholars caution against this, noting Goya was the salaried First Court Painter and the family approved and displayed the work. Figures are grouped in overlapping clusters rather than a rigid pyramid, an 'informality that almost feels like disarray.' Sashes, medals, and jewelry are laid in with rapid, almost abstract strokes that resolve into convincing gold braid only from a viewing distance.
Technique & materials
Oil on canvas assembled from three pieces, 280 x 336 cm. Goya produced individual life studies at Aranjuez before composing the full group in his Madrid studio. Faces use smooth, blended modeling; costume ornaments use loose, heavily impastoed strokes.
Provenance
Produced for the Spanish crown in 1800, documented in the Royal Palace inventory by 1814. Transferred to the Museo del Prado in 1824, remaining continuous crown/state property since, catalogued as P000726.
Conservation history
A major documented restoration by conservator Manuel Arpe in 1967 addressed significant craquelure. The canvas was relined with a secondary backing at some point to stabilize the three-piece support.
