Painted in 1889, A Galaxy of Musicians assembles eleven Indian women from different regional, religious, and caste backgrounds into a single imagined ensemble of musicians and listeners — a Nair veena player, a Marathi woman, a Muslim courtesan, a Parsi woman, a woman in Western dress, among others. No single figure dominates; Ravi Varma distributes attention across a frieze-like horizontal arrangement, a deliberate, radical choice manufacturing a fictive scene of pan-Indian unity decades before independence. The painting operates as both an ethnographic catalogue of costume and jewelry, and an early proto-nationalist argument that Indian identity could be imagined as a single composite whole despite real fragmentation by religion, region, and caste. Feminist critique notes the women are uniformly young, fair-skinned, and demure, arranged for an implied male viewer.

Oil on canvas, roughly 49 x 43 inches. Modeled anatomy, single-point perspective, and chiaroscuro lighting applied to regionally specific textiles, jewelry, and musical instruments rendered from direct study.
Provenance
Commissioned by the Maharaja of Mysore, part of Ravi Varma's body of court-sponsored work for South Indian princely patrons in the 1880s. Held since creation in the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery, Jaganmohan Palace, Mysore, one of the largest public repositories of his original oils.
Conservation history
Comprehensive published restoration records are limited; typical concerns for a century-old oil in South Indian climate include humidity-related canvas stress and varnish darkening, managed through the Jaganmohan Palace gallery's ongoing conservation.
