Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague.
He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer. He was not wealthy; at his death, his wife was left in debt.

Girl with a Pearl Earring is a 'tronie' — a Dutch genre study of an imagined type, not a portrait of a known sitter. Vermeer painted it in Delft around 1665; the model's identity is unknown, theories ranging from his daughter Maria to a 2025 hypothesis naming his patron's daughter Magdalena van Ruijven. The painting disappeared from record until 1881, when it surfaced damaged at a Hague auction for a few guilders, bequeathed to the Mauritshuis in 1902. An anonymous black void (originally deep green, now faded) throws all attention onto her illuminated face and the over-the-shoulder glance that has earned it the nickname 'the Dutch Mona Lisa.' The famous pearl has no drawn outline or hook — just a few strategic dabs of white, confirmed by the 2018 'Girl in the Spotlight' macro-imaging research project. This soft-edged shorthand fuels the ongoing camera-obscura debate: Arthur Wheelock argues the diffused highlights point to it, Karl Schütz insists there is no proof, and no such device appears in Vermeer's estate inventory.
Technique & materials
Oil on canvas, roughly 44.5 x 39 cm. A dense warm-toned ground layer underlies natural ultramarine and ochres; a faded glaze of indigo and weld originally produced a rich green background, now bleached to flat brownish-black. The pearl is rendered with just a few strokes of grey-white paint and a single highlight.
Provenance
Surfaced in poor condition at a 1881 Hague auction; collector Arnoldus des Tombe bought it for a nominal sum and bequeathed it to the Mauritshuis in 1902. Nothing definitive is known of its whereabouts between 1665 and 1881. Toured internationally 2012-2014 during the Mauritshuis renovation before permanent return.
Conservation history
Arrived at the Mauritshuis in 1902 with flaking paint from decades of neglect. A 1994 restoration stabilized the paint layer. The 2018 'Girl in the Spotlight' project used macro X-ray fluorescence and digital microscopy, uncovering delicate eyelashes and a ghost of a green curtain invisible to the naked eye.
