The Story
Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries.
It is also known as the Canadian Falls. The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie within the United States.

Frederic Edwin Church built his reputation on Niagara Falls twice: first with the sensational Niagara (1857), and again with Niagara Falls, from the American Side (1867), commissioned by dealer Michael Knoedler. The 1867 painting shifts the vantage to the American side, positioning the viewer at the brink, looking toward Goat Island and the distant Horseshoe Falls, eliminating all contemporary tourist infrastructure in favor of an invented, pristine viewing platform — a fiction worth noting, since by the 1860s Niagara was already a heavily commercialized tourist destination. A rainbow arcs through the rising spray, Church's signature device proving his mastery of transient atmospheric effects in static oil paint. Church reworked a sepia photograph he had taken on-site in 1856 together with pencil and oil sketches, blurring the line between documentary and theatrical composition.
Technique & materials
Oil on a very large canvas (257 x 227 cm). Church combined direct on-site observation (1856 pencil and oil sketches) with a sepia photograph he later painted over and elaborated in the studio, building luminous, atmospheric transitions through fine glazes.
Provenance
Commissioned in 1866 by dealer Michael Knoedler, completed 1867. Exhibited to acclaim in New York and London. Purchased in 1887 by Scottish-American financier John Stewart Kennedy, who gifted it to Scotland; it entered the National Gallery of Scotland in 1887 and has remained there since, the only major Church work in a European public collection.
Conservation history
No major published restoration campaign is detailed in public National Galleries of Scotland records; large mid-19th-century American exhibition canvases of this type generally face varnish yellowing and canvas tension challenges over time.
