The Deep Dive

Chrome Green - more precisely, chromium oxide green or 'chrome oxide green' - is an opaque, anhydrous form of chromium(III) oxide (Cr2O3) that became one of the nineteenth century's most reliably permanent and non-toxic green pigments. It followed directly from Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin's 1797 discovery of the element chromium; chemists isolated the green oxide as a pigment within about a decade, and it first found industrial use as a porcelain and enamel colorant from around 1809. Stable, large-scale manufacturing became practical in 1838 through the Parisian color-maker Pannetier, allowing the pigment to enter artists' oil and watercolor ranges by mid-century. Chrome Green is chemically and visually distinct from viridian: while both derive from chromium oxide, chrome green is the dry, opaque, anhydrous form (Colour Index PG17), whereas viridian is a transparent, more blue-toned hydrated form, chromium oxide dihydrate (PG18), patented separately by Charles-Ernest Guignet in 1859. Chrome Green's dull, yellowish-olive cast made it visually less exciting than the jewel-toned viridian that soon eclipsed it in fashionable studios, but its total opacity, exceptional lightfastness and, crucially in an era rife with poisonous pigments like Scheele's green and emerald green, its low toxicity kept it in steady use for underpainting, foliage and mixed greens throughout the Victorian period. It also proved valuable well beyond fine art: its ability to mimic the infrared reflectance of living vegetation made it useful in twentieth-century military camouflage paints, and it remains in industrial use today, including in the green ink used to print US currency.

Symbolism

Green pigments in the nineteenth century carried a double reputation: on one hand, the color of nature, growth and the countryside prized by landscape painters; on the other, a genuine public health hazard, since the era's brightest, cheapest greens, Scheele's green and emerald green, were built on arsenic and quietly poisoned wallpaper-makers, dressmakers and homeowners for decades. Chrome Green's principal symbolic weight comes from that contrast: as a stable, non-toxic, reliably permanent green, it represented safety and industrial trustworthiness at a moment when consumers were beginning to fear the very colors decorating their homes. Its dull, opaque, workmanlike cast, set against the more theatrical, jewel-toned viridian that eclipsed it in fine art, also gave it associations with utility over glamour, fitting its later life in camouflage paint and industrial coatings rather than gallery masterpieces. Where viridian evoked luxury and exoticism, chrome oxide green evoked durability, functionality and a kind of unglamorous Victorian reliability.

Pigment history

Chromium was discovered in 1797 by the French chemist Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin, and within about a decade chemists had isolated chromium(III) oxide as a green colorant. Early production was small-scale and secretive: Parisian color-makers developed workable methods and, as was common practice, kept their processes proprietary. In 1838, the color-maker Pannetier established a more stable method for mass-producing the opaque, anhydrous form of chromium oxide green, which found early use as a porcelain and enamel colorant from around 1809 before entering oil and watercolor ranges by mid-century. This opaque 'chrome green' (Colour Index PG17) is chemically distinct from viridian (PG18), the transparent, more blue-toned hydrated form patented by Charles-Ernest Guignet in 1859. Because plain chromium oxide green looks comparatively dull and yellowish next to viridian's jewel-like transparency, viridian became the artists' favorite after the 1860s, while opaque chrome oxide green settled into a secondary role: valued for its total opacity, extreme permanence, and non-toxicity relative to the arsenic- and lead-based greens that dominated the early nineteenth century. It continued in wide industrial use through the twentieth century, including in camouflage paints, where its infrared reflectance mimics living foliage, and in the green ink historically associated with printing US currency.
