Pentimenti

Pentimenti (singular pentimento, Italian for "repentance") are the visible traces of an artist's compositional changes surviving beneath the final paint layer. As oil paint thins and becomes more transparent with age, earlier positions of a hand, a hat, or an entire figure can re-emerge as faint ghost-outlines, revealing a painter's second thoughts in real time. Pentimenti are prized by scholars and conservators alike: they distinguish an original working process from a copy, since a copyist reproduces only the finished image and leaves no such buried revisions. Infrared reflectography and X-radiography are the standard tools for detecting pentimenti that have not yet surfaced visibly, offering a direct window into an artist's evolving intent.
