The Deep Dive

Gamboge is a deep yellow resin drawn chiefly from Garcinia hanburyi, an evergreen tree of the family Clusiaceae native to Cambodia and Thailand, with related sources including Garcinia morella in India and Sri Lanka and Garcinia elliptica and G. heterandra in Myanmar; its name derives from Gambogia, the Latin term for Cambodia. Harvesters tapped trees at least ten years old by cutting spiral incisions into the bark and stripping leaves and shoots so that the resinous gum dripped into hollow bamboo canes; once congealed, the bamboo was broken away to leave cylindrical rods of raw resin known as 'pipe gamboge'. Chemically, the resin's colour comes from compounds including gambogic acid and beta-guttilactone, appearing brownish-yellow raw but grinding to a vivid, transparent deep yellow well suited to glazing in oil and watercolour. Its use is documented in East Asian art from around the 8th century, and it became far more accessible in Europe from the early 17th century as maritime shipping from Southeast Asia expanded. Artists mixed it with Prussian blue to produce greens (most famously William Hooker's 'Hooker's Green' for botanical illustration) and with earth pigments for oranges; J. M. W. Turner kept it in his paintbox and used it for luminous atmospheric glazes. Because raw gamboge is a powerful purgative - a strong laxative in small doses and potentially fatal in larger ones - and because it is poorly lightfast and chemically incompatible with lime and lead white, it was gradually abandoned in commercial paints through the 20th century in favour of safer synthetic yellows.

Symbolism

In Southeast Asian visual and religious culture, gamboge's saturated golden yellow was closely tied to sacred and devotional art: Winsor & Newton's own colour history notes its prominent role in lacquer work, manuscripts, and Buddhist paintings, where the pigment's luminous glow was used to lend a sense of the sacred to religious imagery. Its arrival in Europe as an import from a distant and little-understood part of the world in the early 17th century also gave it a whiff of the exotic, arriving alongside other newly available Southeast Asian trade goods. The pigment's dual nature - a colour capable of extraordinary luminosity in the hands of painters like Turner, yet derived from a resin that is also a potent purgative poison - has made it a recurring example in the history of art materials of how beauty and toxicity were routinely intertwined in the historical palette.

Pigment history

Gamboge resin was produced by tapping mature Garcinia hanburyi trees, at least a decade old, through spiral incisions cut into the bark; the exuded gum was channelled into hollow bamboo canes and left to congeal into solid rods, a method so characteristic that the resulting product was traded as 'pipe gamboge'. Cambodia and Thailand were the principal historical sources, giving the pigment its Latin-derived name. The resin reached Japan and China by around the 8th century, where it was used in painting and manuscript work, but did not become widely available in Europe until the early 17th century, when expanding maritime trade routes brought Southeast Asian goods to European ports in greater volume. From then through the 19th century it was a standard watercolour pigment, prized by artists such as Turner and mixed with Prussian blue to create Hooker's Green for botanical illustration. Its decline through the 20th century was driven by two compounding problems: its toxicity as a strong purgative, which made it hazardous to handle and ingest even in trace amounts, and its poor lightfastness combined with chemical incompatibility with lime and lead white, which limited its use in fresco and certain oil techniques. Genuine gamboge has largely been replaced in commercial paint ranges by more stable synthetic yellows, though natural gamboge sticks are still produced and sold by specialist suppliers for historical and traditional painting practice.
