The Deep Dive
Orpiment is a naturally occurring arsenic sulfide mineral (As2S3) that yields one of the most brilliant, saturated golden-yellows available to pre-modern painters. Its name comes from the Latin auripigmentum ("gold pigment"), a reference both to its lustrous, almost metallic sheen and to alchemists' hopes that it contained transmutable gold; the Persian name zarnikh (root of the word "arsenic") likewise ties to zar, "gold." Orpiment forms in low-temperature hydrothermal veins and hot-spring deposits, typically intergrown with its companion mineral realgar, and was historically mined in Asia Minor, Turkish Kurdistan, Georgia, and the Vesuvius region of Italy. It was in use by the 14th century BC, identified among objects from Tutankhamun's tomb and on Egyptian papyri and wall paintings dating from the 31st to 6th centuries BC; both Pliny and Vitruvius describe it. Because Northern Europe favored lead-tin yellow instead, orpiment's peak Western use came in 16th-century Venice, continuing in Dutch, British, and French painting into the 18th century, alongside long, continuous use in Persian, Indian, Chinese, and Byzantine manuscript and icon painting, where it often substituted for costly shell gold. It is acutely toxic by inhalation and ingestion, incompatible with lead- and copper-based pigments (blackening on contact), and unstable in oil, converting on light exposure into pararealgar and friable white arsenic trioxide. By the 19th century, the far less toxic and more stable chrome yellow and cadmium yellow had displaced it from professional use almost entirely.
Symbolism
Orpiment's blazing, almost artificial-looking yellow carried a double charge in medieval Christian iconography: as a cheap stand-in for gold leaf, it could signify divine radiance, sanctity, and the halos or garments of holy figures in manuscript illumination, yet yellow was simultaneously the color assigned to Judas Iscariot, greed, and betrayal in Italian fresco cycles from Giotto onward, since gold itself had become symbolically entangled with avarice and treason. This ambivalence — sacred radiance on one hand, moral corruption on the other — made orpiment's yellow one of the most semantically loaded colors on the medieval palette, its meaning turning entirely on context: a saint's mantle versus a traitor's cloak. In China, orpiment (cihuang, "female yellow") was conceptually paired with its "male" companion realgar within Daoist thought and used in ritual and lacquer work. Its gold-like luster fueled centuries of alchemical attempts, in both Hellenistic Egypt and medieval China, to transmute the mineral into actual gold, giving it a lasting association with transformation and forbidden knowledge.
Pigment history
Orpiment is a natural mineral, deposited by volcanic and hot-spring hydrothermal activity, that has been mined since antiquity from limited deposits in Asia Minor, Georgia, the Vesuvius region, and Tuscany, almost always intergrown with realgar. Egyptian, Persian, Indian, and Chinese artisans used the ground mineral from at least the 14th century BC. Because natural deposits were scarce, medieval and early modern workshops increasingly relied on artificially sublimed orpiment, produced by heating arsenic or arsenic oxide with sulfur, a technique described in Islamic and later European craft treatises. In Venice, orpiment became close to a standard studio yellow in the 16th century, imported via Mediterranean trade routes, and it remained in more limited use in Dutch, French, and British painting into the 18th century, though northern European painters generally preferred lead-tin yellow. Manuscript illuminators valued it as an economical substitute for gold leaf and shell gold. Its instability in oil media, incompatibility with lead white and copper-based pigments, and severe toxicity by inhalation and skin contact drove its steady replacement across the 18th and 19th centuries by chrome yellow and then cadmium yellow, safer and more lightfast synthetic alternatives; by the 20th century it had essentially disappeared from professional artists' palettes.
