The Deep Dive
Phthalo Blue is the common studio name for copper phthalocyanine (C32H16N8Cu), a synthetic organic pigment classified as Pigment Blue 15 (Colour Index 74160). It was first encountered by accident around 1927-28, when workers at Scottish Dyes Ltd in Grangemouth, Scotland, noticed traces of an intensely blue by-product forming during industrial production of phthalimide from phthalic anhydride and ammonia in iron reaction vessels. The compound's flat, four-lobed macrocyclic structure, closely related to the porphyrin ring found in chlorophyll and hemoglobin, was elucidated by chemist Reginald Patrick Linstead at Imperial College London around 1933-34. Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) commercialized the copper-centred version in 1935 under the trade name Monastral Blue in Britain and Germany, with DuPont following in the United States in 1937; Winsor & Newton later marketed its own line as 'Winsor Blue.' Manufacture involves reacting phthalic anhydride, urea, and a copper salt under heat, then purifying the crude pigment through repeated alkali, acid, and water washes to control crystal form and shade. Because it is entirely synthetic and cheap to produce at industrial scale, Phthalo Blue rapidly displaced costlier historical blues, including natural ultramarine ground from lapis lazuli, in both industrial coatings and artists' paints. It is prized for extraordinary tinting strength, excellent lightfastness, and chemical stability. Today it remains one of the most widely manufactured blue pigments in the world, standard across oil, acrylic, watercolour, ink, and plastics production.
Symbolism
Unlike ultramarine, whose medieval scarcity tied it to devotional imagery of the Virgin Mary, or Prussian blue, born of an 18th-century alchemical accident, Phthalo Blue carries no inherited religious or courtly symbolism - it is a pigment of the industrial and chemical age, first isolated as an incidental by-product of dye manufacturing. Its arrival in the 1930s coincided with modernism's fascination with synthetic materials, and its unnaturally intense, saturated hue made it a marker of manufactured rather than mined colour. Mid-century American painters embraced this synthetic brilliance: Abstract Expressionists exploited its raw chromatic power for gestural, non-representational fields of colour, while later Pop artists used its flat, poster-like intensity to evoke commercial printing and mass production. Because it is inexpensive and endlessly reproducible, Phthalo Blue has also become associated with industrial ubiquity - the blue of ink, plastics, and packaging as much as of fine art.
Pigment history
Phthalocyanine chemistry emerged from industrial accident rather than deliberate pigment research. Around 1927-28, while attempting to synthesize phthalimide from phthalic anhydride and ammonia in iron vessels at Scottish Dyes Ltd (Grangemouth), workers observed an unexplained deep blue contamination, later identified as iron phthalocyanine formed from iron leached out of the vessel walls. Chemists went on to investigate metal-substituted versions, and the copper-centred compound's distinctive macrocyclic structure, closely related to naturally occurring porphyrins such as chlorophyll, was worked out by R. P. Linstead and colleagues at Imperial College London around 1933-34. ICI patented and launched the pigment commercially in 1935 as 'Monastral Blue,' with production following in Germany (I.G. Farben) and the United States (DuPont, 1937). Manufacturing scaled up using the phthalic anhydride-urea-copper salt process, refined through repeated acid and alkali washing to control crystal size and shade, and adsorbed onto an aluminium hydrate base for use as a colourant. Since the mid-20th century, formulation work has focused on controlling crystalline polymorphism (alpha versus beta forms) to fine-tune red- versus green-shade blues, and on eliminating polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contaminants once associated with older manufacturing routes, yielding the higher-purity Pigment Blue 15 variants sold today.
