The Deep Dive
Phthalo Green is the artists'-trade name for chlorinated (and, in some grades, brominated) copper phthalocyanine, designated Pigment Green 7 (chlorinated, blue-shade) and Pigment Green 36 (brominated, yellow-shade). It is the direct chemical sibling of Phthalo Blue: replacing hydrogen atoms on the outer rings of the copper phthalocyanine molecule with chlorine, or with a mix of chlorine and bromine, shifts its light absorption and turns the pigment from blue to green. Following ICI's 1935 commercial launch of Phthalocyanine Blue, chemists explored halogenated derivatives, and Phthalocyanine Green reached the market in 1938. Manufacture involves halogenating the pre-formed copper phthalocyanine molecule under controlled conditions; the degree and type of halogenation determines the exact shade, with heavily chlorinated grades trending blue-green and brominated grades trending yellow-green. Like its blue counterpart, it is insoluble in water, alkalis, and organic solvents, extremely lightfast (rated 8 on the Blue Wool Scale), and possesses very high tinting strength, so that tiny amounts overwhelm any mixture. Its introduction gave artists and manufacturers a stable, non-toxic green alternative to the historically popular but dangerous arsenic-based Emerald Green (Paris Green) and to the more muted, cobalt-based Viridian. Since the mid-20th century it has become a staple of oil, acrylic, and watercolour ranges worldwide, valued for saturated, transparent glazing and for mixing convincing natural greens with earths and yellows.
Symbolism
Phthalo Green inherited none of the folkloric dread that clung to its arsenical predecessors, Scheele's Green and Paris Green, whose beauty had been inseparable from documented poisonings. Instead, its symbolism is bound up with the modern promise of safe synthetic chemistry - a green that could be worn, printed, or painted without risk. Its extreme, almost artificial intensity has also made it emblematic of a specifically modern, manufactured nature: a green more saturated than anything found in a leaf or field, useful to artists precisely because it reads as unnatural, electric, and machine-made. In postwar American painting this synthetic vividness became a tool for pure, non-representational colour statements, while later commercial and pop-cultural uses in packaging, printing inks, and synthetic dyes reinforced its association with industrial modernity rather than pastoral or symbolic tradition.
Pigment history
Phthalocyanine green followed directly from the discovery and commercialization of phthalocyanine blue. Once ICI had established reliable industrial synthesis of copper phthalocyanine in the early 1930s, chemists investigated halogenated derivatives of the same macrocycle to broaden the colour range. Chlorinating the outer benzene rings of the molecule with up to fourteen to sixteen chlorine atoms shifted its absorption spectrum from blue toward green, and the resulting pigment, Phthalocyanine Green G (later designated Pigment Green 7), was introduced to the market in 1938, only three years after Phthalocyanine Blue. A later variant using bromine in place of some chlorine atoms, Pigment Green 36, produced a warmer, more yellow-shade green. Manufacturing follows the same halogenation-and-purification logic as the blue: the pre-formed copper phthalocyanine is treated with chlorine or bromine under controlled conditions, then washed and adsorbed onto a carrier such as aluminium hydrate to fix particle size and hue. Because it offered lightfastness, chemical stability, and non-toxicity that arsenic-based Emerald Green and even the more expensive Viridian could not match, phthalo green steadily displaced older greens across industrial and artistic markets through the mid-20th century, and modern manufacturing continues to refine crystal form and purity for consistency across oil, acrylic, and printing-ink applications.
