The Deep Dive

Smalt is a pigment made by grinding cobalt-blue potassium glass into a coarse powder. It is produced by roasting cobalt-bearing ore (smaltite or cobaltite) to drive off arsenic and produce "zaffre," an impure cobalt oxide, which is then fused with quartz sand and potash at high temperature into a deep blue glass, shock-cooled in water to shatter it, and ground to the desired grain size, typically 10 to 20 micrometers, coarser than most other pigments, since fine grinding weakens its color. The Italian-derived name relates to smaltare, "to melt." Smalt's blue lineage traces conceptually to ancient Egyptian blue, though its color comes from cobalt rather than copper, and cobalt-colored glass appears in antiquity and in 12th-century Mongolian and Ottoman contexts before European manufacture. It was clearly described as an artist's pigment by the later 15th and 16th centuries and became especially important in 16th- and 17th-century European oil painting, particularly in the Netherlands, as a much cheaper substitute for natural ultramarine ground from lapis lazuli. Cobalt ore reaching Dutch manufacturers in the 17th century traveled from Saxony through German trade routes. Because it dried quickly and helped other, slower-drying pigments cure, smalt was often mixed in small quantities purely as a drier, beyond its use as a blue colorant. Its major drawback is severe fading: over time, particularly in oil, smalt loses its blue color and turns grey or brownish-yellow, a change rooted in the leaching of potassium out of the glass structure.

Symbolism

Smalt rarely carried the elevated devotional status of ultramarine, whose material rarity made it a marker of a patron's wealth and piety in Marian imagery; instead, smalt functioned as blue's practical, everyday substitute, the pigment that let ordinary skies, drapery, and decorative borders be rendered in blue without lapis lazuli's expense. Its widespread adoption in Netherlandish genre and history painting of the 17th century reflects the era's growing market for moderately priced pictures for a broad merchant clientele, rather than court or church patronage alone. Ironically, smalt's chemical instability has given it an unintended second symbolic life in art history and conservation: skies painted vivid blue in works by Paolo Veronese have faded to grey, and the Virgin's robe in Tintoretto's Madonna of the Stars has turned brownish, so that many paintings viewers see today no longer convey the color relationships their painters intended. Conservators now treat smalt discoloration as a visible marker of time itself, a pigment whose physical decay quietly rewrites a painting's mood and meaning long after the artist's death.

Pigment history

Smalt is not a mined mineral pigment but a manufactured one: cobalt-bearing ore (smaltite or cobaltite) was roasted to produce zaffre, an impure cobalt oxide, which glassmakers then fused with potash and silica sand into deep blue glass, cooled rapidly to shatter it, and ground into pigment-grade powder. Cobalt-blue glass has ancient precedents, and cobalt-colored glass has been identified in 12th-century Mongolian and Ottoman contexts, but smalt's clear emergence as an artist's pigment dates to the later 15th century, with description as such by 1584, and its major period of use spans the 16th and 17th centuries. It became a specialty of Dutch and Flemish glassmakers and pigment suppliers, who imported cobalt ore from Saxon mines via German trade routes and sold ground smalt as a cheap alternative to costly natural ultramarine. Its coarse particle size, commonly 10-20 micrometers, occasionally reaching 70 micrometers as documented in a J.M.W. Turner painting, and its glassy transparency gave it a distinctive, relatively weak color compared to opaque pigments. Widespread use declined through the 18th century as its severe tendency to fade and discolor in oil became apparent, and it was progressively displaced by more stable synthetic blues: Prussian blue after 1704, cobalt blue after its 1802 discovery, and synthetic ultramarine after 1826.
