The Deep Dive
Titanium white is composed of titanium dioxide (TiO2), a chemically inert, non-toxic white compound occurring in nature in three crystal forms: anatase, rutile, and brookite, of which only anatase and rutile are manufactured as pigment. The element titanium was identified in 1791 by the Cornish clergyman William Gregor in local ilmenite sand and named in 1795 by Martin Heinrich Klaproth. It took over a century for a stable, opaque white pigment to be engineered from it: patents for TiO2 production were filed in Norway in 1913, and commercial manufacture began in 1916 almost simultaneously at the Titanium Pigment Corporation of Niagara Falls, New York, and at Titan Co. AS in Norway, both using the anatase form. Because pure titanium dioxide alone dried to a weak, spongy paint film, early pigments were coprecipitated with inert extenders such as barium sulfate, or blended with zinc oxide, to give the film body. An artist-grade titanium white oil colour, marketed in the United States as Permalba, appeared in 1921, and major colourmen adopted the pigment through the 1920s and 1930s: Société Bourgeois in 1925, Winsor & Newton in 1928, and the Dutch firm Talens in 1937. The more opaque, more durable rutile crystal form reached industrial-scale production in 1937-38, and DuPont introduced a chlorine-based manufacturing process in 1948. By mid-century titanium white had displaced both lead white, which is toxic and blackens on contact with sulfide gases, and zinc white, which is brittle and prone to cracking, becoming the dominant white pigment of modern and contemporary painting.
Symbolism
Titanium white's arrival coincided with, and materially enabled, the visual language of 20th-century modernism: an unyielding, mineral, almost clinical brightness quite unlike the warmer, slightly translucent luminosity of lead white that had defined painting for centuries. Its extreme opacity and covering power lent themselves to the flat, hard-edged fields of colour favoured by geometric abstraction and Minimalism, while its blank, reflective brilliance suited a modern visual culture increasingly saturated with white product design, white gallery walls, and white surgical and industrial imagery. Because it was cheap, stable, and non-toxic relative to lead white, titanium white also carried associations of safety and mass availability, marking a shift from the guarded, expensive, poisonous whites of the old masters' studios to a democratized, industrially produced whiteness available in tubes and cans to any painter or house-painter alike. Conservators have since found that this same industrial whiteness carries a hidden fragility: some titanium white paint films chalk and degrade under ultraviolet light, a reminder that modernity's brightest, most confident colour is not immune to time.
Pigment history
Manufacturing titanium white pigment required solving a problem later than discovering the element itself: pure TiO2 crystals needed to be grown at a controlled, fine particle size to scatter light efficiently as an opaque white, and the earliest 1916-1919 production by the Titanium Pigment Company in the US and Titan Co. AS in Norway used the anatase crystal form, which was cheaper to produce but chalks readily outdoors. Pure, uncut titanium dioxide formulations followed in France and the United States between 1923 and 1926, but manufacturers still routinely coprecipitated the pigment with barium or calcium sulfate to control cost and improve the paint film's working properties, a practice that conservation scientists now use to help date 20th-century canvases. The rutile crystal form, denser and more UV-stable, was first produced experimentally in Czechoslovakia, Germany, and the United States around 1931 and reached industrial scale by 1937-38. In 1948, DuPont introduced a more efficient chlorine-based ('chloride') production process that became the modern industry standard, alongside the older sulfate process. Artist colourmen progressively reformulated their white ranges around titanium dioxide through the 1920s-30s, and by the second half of the 20th century titanium white, often blended in small amounts with zinc oxide for handling, had become the standard white of oil, acrylic, and house paint manufacturing worldwide.
