The Deep Dive

Verdigris is a blue-green pigment consisting of copper acetates, ranging from neutral verdigris (copper(II) acetate hydrate, Cu(CH3COO)2·H2O) to basic verdigris compounds of variable hydration and basicity. It is one of the oldest manufactured pigments, produced since antiquity by exposing metallic copper to acetic-acid vapor together with water vapor and air. Medieval and Renaissance workshops commonly hung copper strips over vinegar or in the fumes of fermenting grape must or dung for weeks, then scraped off and refined the resulting blue-green crust. By the 18th century, Montpellier in southern France dominated commercial production, stacking copper plates in clay pots with residue from distilled wine; roughly 80 percent of output was exported abroad through a system of licensed female brokers. For painting, verdigris was often dissolved in resin (mastic, turpentine, wax) to form transparent "copper resinate" glazes prized for their luminous, saturated green in landscapes and drapery, and it was the most vibrant green pigment available before the 19th-century arrival of emerald green and viridian. Its major drawback was chronic instability: it reacts with sulfur-containing pigments such as ultramarine or orpiment, darkens over time, and can degrade to brown or black, especially where the binder or varnish has broken down. The pigment is also mildly toxic. Montpellier's verdigris industry collapsed after the First World War as synthetic greens offered greater permanence at lower cost, and today verdigris survives only as a specialist historical pigment for conservation and reconstruction, rarely sold as an artists' color.

Symbolism

The name verdigris derives from the Old French vert-de-Grèce, "green of Greece," tying the pigment to the classical Mediterranean world from which its use spread through Europe. Because it was costly and labor-intensive to manufacture, verdigris greens carried a note of luxury in commissions where lush, saturated foliage or drapery signaled a patron's wealth. Its chemical instability also gave it an unintended symbolic afterlife: paintings where verdigris glazes have browned or blackened with age are now read by conservators and viewers alike as visible records of time's passage on the artwork itself. Separately, but sharing its name and chemistry, the blue-green patina that naturally forms on weathered copper and bronze monuments and roofs is popularly called verdigris; this oxidation color has become a widely recognized marker of age, endurance, and civic history, most famously on the copper skin of the Statue of Liberty.

Pigment history

Verdigris was made since antiquity by exposing copper to acetic-acid fumes together with air and moisture; medieval workshops suspended copper strips over vinegar or buried them in dung or fermenting grape must for weeks, then scraped and refined the blue-green crust. Dissolving this basic verdigris in acetic acid produced the more stable neutral verdigris (copper acetate hydrate). By the 18th century Montpellier, France, had become Europe's dominant commercial center, with copper plates stacked in clay pots holding the residue of distilled wine; workers who handled the mildly toxic pigment over years reportedly developed some tolerance to its effects. For fine-art use, verdigris was frequently combined with resins such as mastic, turpentine, and wax to form transparent copper-resinate glazes valued for their brilliance in foliage and fabric. The Montpellier industry declined sharply after the First World War, undercut by synthetic greens such as emerald green (from the early 19th century) and viridian (from the 1830s) that offered far greater lightfastness. Today verdigris pigment is essentially obsolete in commercial artists' materials, produced only in small batches by specialist suppliers such as Kremer Pigmente for conservators and historical reconstruction.
